The bay leaf from the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) has a long and noble history, steeped in mythology. In Ancient Greece, the victors of games were crowned with laurel leaves as the laurel tree was the favored plant of the sun God Apollo, patron of the Pythian games. His priestesses at Delphi also favored the bay laurel and burned its leaves as they conducted their prophecies.
Apollo favored the Bay Laurel because the tree itself had once been a nymph, named Daphne, whom he had fallen in love with. She, however, did not feel the same about him and begged her river god father to help her escape. The river god turned Daphne into the laurel, and to honor her memory, Apollo held the tree as sacred.
